Since opening in 2003, Adopt A Pet has found permanent homes for thousands of neglected, rescued and rehabilitated dogs and cats. But with the death of founder and founder Cicely Blumberg last year, the refuge must close its doors. Staff are desperate to find homes for the remaining 43 dogs and six cats.
âIt’s very emotional, but I think right now I’m more focused on seeing these animals get good homes,â said Desiree Harris, the kennel manager. The private, non-profit organization, which opened in Milnerton in 2003 and moved to Philippi in 2014, has found homes for 300 animals in the past 12 months.
Harris, who has worked with Adopt A Pet for eight years, said the flow of animals in need of rescue is constant. âIt never ends,â she said.
Many animals come from the surrounding townships, and the main reasons they are brought in are financial problems or neglect. âIt’s a lack of education,â on pet nutrition and health care, said Harris. “Some people really love their animals, but don’t know how to take care of them.”
Recently, many people have lost their jobs and have attempted to surrender their animals, but Adopt A Pet is unable to accommodate them, Harris said.
Karin Reissenauer, volunteer and coordinator, said the organization has been struggling for some time. Expenses, including salaries, rent, pet food and health care, such as vaccinations and sterilizations, cost between R 120,000 and R 150,000 per month. It costs around R1500 a month to keep a dog, and some also need medical attention, including surgery.
Reissenauer said Adopt a Pet is asking other organizations such as TEARS (The Emma Animal Rescue Society) for help with foster care, but ideally the animals should go to permanent homes. . The adoption fees have been removed and they are asking for a donation instead.
Reissenauer is happy that she was able to help, but “it’s not really feasible to do something like this 24/7 without income.”
âIt’s exhausting. You can’t close. In fact, you don’t have a personal life anymore.
No closing date has been set, but once Adopt a Pet is closed, other options nearby include the Animal Rescue Organization.
