Statistics from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals indicate that approximately 6.5 million pets enter United States animal shelters nationwide each year. This number is estimated to have decreased by 7.2 million since 2011. Approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year. However, this number has dropped from around 2.6 million in 2011. This is due in part to increased adoptions and the successful return of stray animals to their owners. Meanwhile, approximately 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year.
