Development to stave off rescue of San Leandro “special needs” pets

After five years at the Bayfair Center in San Leandro, an animal adoption group that specializes in finding homes for “imperfect” dogs and cats has just three weeks to find a new headquarters.

Rick Hollander, executive director of Nobody’s Perfekt Dogs & Cats, said the group was being shown the door to make room for new developments on the site. He has until September 9 to vacate the space, and volunteers are now scrambling to pack things up, find foster homes for the pets they have and find a new headquarters.

Part of Bayfair Center, one of the first malls built in the East Bay, was sold in June to a group of developers.

Nobody’s Perfect is a unique rescue group. This is not a shelter and it does not accept pets from individuals. Instead, it is a “rescue of last resort”, taking in dogs and cats – from shelters – who are considered difficult, if not impossible, to find homes due to physical and emotional challenges. . These animals are one step away from euthanasia when Nobody’s Perfect steps in.

According to the group’s mission statement, it seeks to find homes for pets “where ‘imperfection’ is tolerated in exchange for a lifetime of love and devotion. Some of the animals have physical challenges such as missing or crippled limbs, or have medical conditions that require more care than the average person may be willing to accept.

Others are simply older pets or traumatized from being taken from their homes and placed in a shelter with dozens of other animals, leaving them to cower when a future adoptive family passes by. Descriptions of pets available for adoption are brutally honest, explaining the animal’s background and issues.

Nobody’s Perfekt used their Bayfair Center headquarters as a showcase to showcase some of these pets and as a calm, quiet place for people to learn about pets.

Looking for new premises, the group is looking for a 5,000 to 6,000 square foot space with on-site parking. The group needs enough space for the pets where they can be socialized safely. It also needs space for a pet shop, storage area and a visitor center where the public can visit with available dogs and cats.

“We are appealing for a landlord who can provide a generous donation of use of property for our rescue,” Hollander said.

The group is looking for a space between Hayward and Oakland, ideally San Leandro, San Lorenzo or Castro Valley.

Nobody’s Perfekt is entirely volunteer run and relies on community support. He is also looking for volunteers who can help pack up the storefront, as well as add other foster homes for dogs and cats.

Donations to the relocation fund and other offers of assistance can be made through the organization’s website, www.nobodysperfektdogs.org.
