EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Hearts broke across Borderland on Wednesday following the publication of a video showing an abandoned husky by the side of the road.
The husky has since been placed with a loving family, but the effect of the video remains.
KTSM 9 News asked community members to submit their pet rescue love stories to remind us that often our animals save us as much as we saved them.
-
Finn, Lauren Zimmerman: âWe pulled Finn out of EPAS in March 2020 when they initially made an urgent appeal for temporary foster homes leading to the closure. When we brought him home and realized he was deaf, we immediately knew we had to keep him. He’s been the perfect companion for over a year now and has made the distancing and isolation during the pandemic much more bearable. I’m so glad we decided to adopt. -
Jack, Chris Lewels: âI met my best friend at El Paso Saddle Blanket ten years ago in a cage. He scared me and we didn’t know each other for about a month. He is now my savior and he came home on August 22, my brother’s birthday, his birthday – my favorite day. -
Clara, Oscar Garza and Lena Alvarez: âI love Clara because she is the cutest cat I have ever met. She greets everyone with kisses and is always there to hug you when you are sad. Saving her was the best decision! -
Matilda, Ivy and Penny, Zach Zuniga: âMatilda, Ivy and Penny have their own rescue story and they all end up the same: on my couch. Adopt, don’t shop. -
Sox, Michelle Millen: âSox is almost 6 years old and was abandoned by an owner who ‘just couldn’t PCS with him’. He didn’t like men and tried to kill my husband but now they love each other so much and he was the best with the kids and our two other dogs. The black lab is Sox. -
Penelope, Heather Harmston: âMy fiancé Mauro found our little furry baby Penelope being chased by yard dogs in his trucking business. He heard her cry as he tried to drive the truck away from them. He grabbed her and took her home and now I’ve been replaced. She became our oldest dog’s best friend and brought her back to life for a year until her death. She was the best blessing we could ever ask for. -
Oliver, Lindsay Greenup: âOliver was adopted from the Humane Society of El Paso in 2014 thanks to the former volunteer coordinator! She knew I was looking for a weenie dog and called me when three of them came from the dachshund rescue in Albuquerque. I wanted to take all 3 of them, but I knew I could only choose one. I immediately fell in love with Oliver. He’s been my sidekick ever since. So happy we found each other! -
George, Sylvia Coulehan: âIt’s a rescue in reverse. I went to the Humane Society in El Paso to look for a new furry baby to help me heal from the loss of my Maltese, Mikey. As I was escorted through the kennels, our eyes met, and it was love at first sight. Georgie is almost five years old and the absolute love of my life. -
Fancy, Priscilla Duran: âFancy was adopted by the humanitarian society, but her original family had a hard time and they ended up putting her on a Facebook ad. She was badly neglected but she was still confident. She was a wanderer and a mom, but now she’s just the princess of the house. He’s such a wonderful baby. -
Mekha, Ashleigh Sambrano: âI had Mekha at a shelter in New Mexico. She was found on the street as a puppy and was abused by the monsters who had had her before me. Now she is 12 and is living her best life. -
Graham, John and Liliana Cope: âGraham was left in the heat of El Paso in a cardboard box in the desert. He has found his home forever with the most loving big sister. Thank you, Animal Rescue League of El Paso! -
Milo, Alexa Meraz: âWe saved Milo from Alamogordo Animal Control after seeing his adorable photo on their Facebook page. He contracted parvo within the first week and luckily survived after extensive treatment. He is playful, goofy and energetic and he made us so happy! I can’t imagine life without him. -
Odys, Jamie Rose: âIt’s Odys. I found him in the middle of the street. He was dirty, in a dirty little shirt, and he was only a few months old. I called him and he came directly. I asked all the houses around if he was there, they all said no, so I took him to see if he was chipped. He wasn’t. So I washed him and he’s been by my side ever since. -
Bluebell, Celina Quintana: âHere’s a look at my little boy Bluebell! I fell head over heels in love with him after one of our Mutt Mondays at KTSM. He’s now one of the most important parts of my life, he’s come a long way from his separation anxiety and skin disease. He will be one year old in September !! -
Snowcone, Erin Coulehan: “My fiance saw the prettiest puppy run into an irrigation canal two days after my birthday in 2019. He brought her home, she wasn’t chipped and fits in perfectly in our existing rescue bag. She has been our Snowcone ever since. -
Hamburger, Blaine McNutt: âA hamburger was found roaming the streets of Sunland Park, New Mexico last summer. He was picked up and diagnosed with pneumonia and stage 3 heartworm disease – you could insert your fingers into the space between his ribs. My fiancee and I have other rescue bulldogs and have started cheering on the little guy. After a long recovery, we couldn’t let him go! -
Minnie, Kate Leverton Miller: âOur rescue German Shepherd, Minnie, was abandoned in San Marcos after delivering a litter of puppies. She was still breastfeeding when she arrived at the shelter. She couldn’t take care of her puppies, but now she’s looking after our baby. -
Marley, Toni, Booboo, Coco, Louie, Grecia Green: âMarley (white cat) was rescued from a foster family and was the last of her litter. Toni (in the middle) we found him behind Kiki’s after having lunch in the summer of 2011. My oldest, Booboo, whom we rescued 30 minutes before the refuge closed for the day, was going to be euthanized. Coco was a street cat that we rescued from behind an apartment complex when our son was 3 months old. Louie, who is not there, was rescued from a lady who was selling tamales. -
Eisenhower, Tristian London: âThis is our Eisenhower, when we were barely a new little family, my wife went to help a friend retrieve a Husky from the shelter, as she saw this great old Saint Bernard there, who despite being as giant as he was fluffy, was gentle with our newborn daughter. When she asked about the process and the timeframe for her to tell me about it, they let her know that a truck had just stopped to pick up the dog with others because they didn’t ‘had not been adopted and had been around for too long. He was quickly put in his car and brought home, he was a wonderful and loving boy, my daughter and son’s first pet, protector of every household as our family grew, and my best friend by my side morning and night for my coffee & cigarettes for almost 4 years until we lost him to bone marrow cancer. RIP Eisenhower. -
Rooster, Carrie Teran: âStray in Sunland Park, NM. He had a bad scar on his back. Best guess, a chemical burn. He was with us for a year! Aggressive dog. Finally found the perfect family for him in Las Cruces He will never know cruelty again. -
Kaiser, Sean Isassi: âHe was tied to a tree and left to die. I saved him and although he is aggressive. I still love him.”
