MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield Area Pet Shelter (MAPS) is moving to its new facility at 3500 Downwind Drive, Marshfield.
“Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a small group of staff and volunteers will transport remaining supplies and shelter cats and dogs to the new building this week,” a MAPS statement said.
âWe are really excited to move into our new space,â said Karen Rau, Managing Director of MAPS. “This is a historic moment for our community, and we are very grateful to everyone who made this possible.”
MAPS was founded by a small group of volunteers in September 2011 to provide humane results to animals in the Marshfield area. The organization started as a network of foster families, with volunteers looking after the animals in their homes. In 2013, the shelter remodeled a space in the Marshfield Mall to serve as an adoption center. In 2015, volunteers renovated the old terminal at Marshfield Municipal Airport into a temporary shelter.
Thanks to funds from the JP Adler family, the City of Marshfield, Paul and Joann Schreiner and many other contributors, enough money was raised and the organization opened its new shelter in the summer of 2019.
âIt’s been a long journey, but the future is bright for the local animals and the humans who care for them,â said Rau. “We look forward to using this facility not only to take care of the animals, but also to have a space that we can serve the community through educational workshops and other opportunities.”
The new shelter measures approximately 9,000 square feet and includes admission and medical rooms, indoor and outdoor accessible dog kennels, quarantine rooms, cat patios and a free area for dogs. roaming cats named in honor of Brittany Zimmermann.
âDue to the current pandemic, there are currently no opening hours available in the new building. Visits and adoptions are open by appointment only. A ribbon cutting and an open house will take place at a later date, âthe statement read.
