Pet rescue in Kildare: good eggs provide shelter with income

Around this time last year, we featured the great work Paraic and Siofra O’Leary were doing in their enterprising fresh egg business. They sell free-range eggs from their farm gate which is located on the canal between Sallins and Digby Bridge.

At the time they had 10 hens but had plans to expand. They now have 26 hens laying an average of 24 eggs a day and their business is thriving.

What’s really nice about these two kids is that every year they select different charities to donate the income from their business. Last week, they donated a large amount of dog food, cat food, and cat and dog toys to the KWWSPCA.

They showed us around their bustling farm and explained that they knew each hen by color or face. They have to separate the hens at night because the older, stronger hens bully the younger ones and peck their feathers, so they all learn where they are in the pecking order.

Their adorable collie named Fly watches over the hens and they have just added two piglets to the barnyard named Henry and Snout.

Thank you very much Siofra and Paraic for your kindness, your enthusiasm and for introducing us to all the animals.

Online fundraiser for Noah’s Ark

Our online Noah’s Ark fundraising auctions resume in January. These auctions contain great items at low prices and are always popular with our Facebook followers.

You can see what’s on offer by going to Facebook at: Kwwspca Shop – Noah’s Ark. All auction proceeds go to the operation of the animal sanctuary.
